Syracuse legends Ernie Davis and Jim Brown died 60 years apart, had enduring connection
A dream Cleveland Browns backfield of Ernie Davis and Jim Brown never happened after Davis was diagnosed with leukemia and died before he could play a down in the NFL.
The connection of the all-time Syracuse University greats nevertheless remains undeniable.
Brown, at one time the career rushing leader in the NFL, died Thursday at his Los Angeles home at age 87. Exactly 60 years earlier, on May 18, 1963, Elmira legend Davis died at age 23.
Among the estimated 4,000 people who attended Davis' funeral was Brown, who grew close to Davis while helping recruit him to Syracuse out of Elmira Free Academy.
Brown played at Syracuse from 1954 to 1956 and Davis starred there from 1959 to 1961.
Brown attended a celebration for Davis in Elmira in February of 1962, months before the leukemia diagnosis, where they posed for photos together and talked enthusiastically about their impending backfield pairing.
