Assembly Bill 256 in California was signed into law in October of 2023 prohibits officers from using expired registration tags as the sole reason for pulling someone over.
It reads that expired stages can no longer be "the sole basis for any enforcement action before the second month after the month of expiration of the vehicle’s registration."
However, if the vehicle is stopped for another reason, like a broken taillight or for speeding, then the expired tags are fair game.
